Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) is teaming up with Disney for a film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film will feature a script by Lapine and additional songs by Sondheim. No casting or film schedule has been announced. Marshall first eyed an Into the Woods movie musical last year and then met with Lapine.

Lots of Into the Woods news lately…add this to the pile.
Can Joanna Gleason and Bernadette be in this?
I’d vote for it. ALSO This is my favorite musical of all time ALL TIME
My favorite too! I had a movie version of this cast about a decade and a half ago. Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt were the Baker and Wife. Their chemistry on Mad About You was take-it-to-the-bank.
To quote the last section of the article:
This is the third major attempt to adapt Into the Woods for the big screen. In 1994 Penny Marshall oversaw a reading with Robin Williams, Goldie Hawn and Cher. Later the film was developed by Columbia Pictures, with director Rob Minkoff attached, and Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan and Susan Sarandon rumored to star.
Yep. I believe it when they actually start shooting. (And, man, do I ever wish we had the “Robin Williams, Goldie Hawn and Cher” version.)
At one point Meryl Streep was attached as The Baker’s Wife, I would also like to see Cher in this (side note,m when ABC was developing all those TV musicals (Annie, Music Man, ect … ) they had also started talks to do a remake of Mame (please someone remake this the movie with Lucille Ball is terrible) with Cher in the role of Mame Dennis, let’s also do this.
