Improv Notes
Great Improv Notes from Morgan Phillips last night’s Dumpster Tequila rehearsal.
- When you play a character that is different, such as a mentally handicapped characters, don’t just make them mentally handicapped, make them characters that you care about. And think of your personal gauge as this “If you saw the type character you were playing in the audience would you regret your choices.”
-Always have an intent behind everything you’re doing. This is one of the best most used improv notes ever. You have to have a reasoning behind what you’re doing. You can’t just get up there and do a scene that just is, your characters need motivation.
-Commit! Commit! Commit! You can’t go into a scene half-assed and then give up your choices. Stick to them even if you think they suck, your team will support and justify you, so get in there and stick to your guns.
-Expect the unexpected. Don’t let things throw you, you knew that was going to happen. You’re smart and you can predict the future! While you may not know what is going to happen in the scene, you can’t let the audience know that you don’t know what the hell is going on.
-Move! No one likes to see a scene where two people just stand around. Be active in your scenes, people like watching people move around. Coffee and Cigarettes is boring, if I wanted to watch a conversation, I would. Be involved in your scene.
